Books may always be renewed online before the due date to further extend their loan period if users are not able to return them.

Questions and Answers


  • Library material may be renewed twice within the maximum renewal period unless requested by another client. Once the maximum renewal period has been reached, the material must be returned to the library.
  • Return books to Client Service at the Stellenbosch University Library or the lending desk of any of the branch libraries.
  • It is possible to return books by putting them in the book drop boxes at the libraries’ entrances.
  • If you are not returning to campus in the near future, please mail (registered with tracking number) or courier books back to the Library and Information Service.

  • Clients will be notified of overdue items by email. 
    A fine of R2.00 per item per day will be charged for overdue items.
  • An email will be sent as validation of returned items. 
    Fine limit: R30.00 - borrowing privileges will be suspended when this limit has been exceeded.
  • Clients who do not return or renew borrowed items within six weeks of the due date will have their lending privileges suspended.
  • They will also receive an account for the replacement cost of the items. On receipt of the account, items should be returned immediately or the replacement cost paid - only SnapScan and EFT payments are accepted - or a matching replacement copy offered in its place.
  • Library material neither on loan nor on the designated shelf should be reported to the library concerned.  The staff will try to locate the missing item and report back to the client.
  • Missing items may be requested via interlibrary loans if it is urgently required.
  • All new books are placed on a designated shelf for new books at the respective libraries for one week.
  • These books may not be borrowed during this period but may be reserved at the library concerned.
  • These reserved books may be collected from the respective libraries at the close of the display period.
