Biography
Juanita Pienaar is a Professor in the Department of Private Law and an extraordinary professor at the North-West University. Professor Pienaar was the Faculty of Law’s inaugural Vice-Dean of Research and Internationalisation. She lectures Customary Law, Property Law, and Advanced Property Law. Her research focus is property law in general and land reform and related matters in particular. The latter culminated in an all-encompassing publication, Land Reform (Juta 2014), which forms part of the Juta Property Law Library. She has co-authored some of the standard Property Law publications, including Silberberg and Schoeman’s Law of Property (with Badenhorst P and Mostert H) and Principles of the Law of Property (Mostert H and Pope A (eds)). She is also responsible for the Land Reform section, “Land”, of the Law of South Africa (2010, with Mostert H and Van Wyk J), and the chapter on “Land” in Constitutional Law of South Africa (with Brickhill J). She was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Law Commission (Land Legislation 2008 to 2011) and the acting judge in the Land Claims Court for the period 2006 to 2007. She is a fellow of the NRF Research Chair in Property Law and was a frequent recipient of the Vice-Rector’s Research Award for researchers who contributed the most to accredited outputs. For the period 2014 to April 2019, she was a member of the Expert Panel for NRF Ratings, and convenor for two years. In 2016, she was awarded the Chancellor’s Award for Research. Professor Pienaar is one of four international advisors approached by the Scottish Land Commission to participate in the Scottish Land Reform Programme, which is currently in progress.
