Eugéne van Rensburg is an industrial microbiologist, who holds a PhD in Microbiology from the University of the Free State and an MBA degree from Stellenbosch University. He joined the Department of Chemical Engineering as a postdoctoral fellow in 2008 and later as senior researcher in 2013. He is currently appointed as Associate Professor in Chemical Engineering.
Research Interests
Eugéne’s research interests focus on constraint-driven fermentation biotechnology and bioprocess engineering for the valorisation of complex waste streams. His work includes the development of microbial fermentation systems for converting lignocellulosic, agro-processing and organic wastes into renewable fuels, bio-based chemicals and microbial protein, as well as anaerobic digestion and related bioenergy systems. A central theme of his research is understanding microbial and process performance under industrially relevant conditions such as high-solids loading, inhibitor-rich substrates and scale-up constraints.
