Adding value to the Maties network
As the regional manager retail qualification for Asia-Pacific at the BMW Group in Munich, Germany, Heinrich Schwella has his work cut out for him. But this Matie still finds time to give back to his alma mater.
Heinrich, who obtained a BCom LLB from Stellenbosch University, says that he decided to volunteer in 2019. His first task was to help organise an alumni event in Munich.
“I decided to volunteer after meeting Karen Bruns, the Senior Director of the Development and Alumni Relations Division at SU, and the reasons were twofold," he says.
“Firstly, the alumni network can be a big value add – even more so when one is abroad and has to build up a new network. Networks are key to being successful and integrating into one's new environment, and leveraging is of benefit not only to new arrivals in the country, but also to the locals. Secondly, we all had a good time at Stellenbosch University and it is a good way to share and reminisce about the good times in Matieland."
When asked if he thinks that more Maties should consider giving of their time and talent, he says that it would be nice if more Maties would participate in events. “The more people get involved, the more variety is added and that brings value to the network. For those who consider volunteering – we always welcome additional help."
This Matie also has fond memories of his time in Stellenbosch and a number of things stand out. “The simplicity of a life where one was able to explore, enjoy and experience. So many different experiences – residence, studies, meeting people with similar interests – made my student years memorable. The beauty of Stellenbosch and the surroundings also played a part."
