SU appoints safety and compliance ambassadors to ensure COVID-19 compliance amongst students on campus
Stellenbosch University's Covid 19 Campus Operations Workstream appointed 60 student safety ambassadors to ensure that students on campus adhere to COVID-19 protocols and compliance.
Brandon Como, Events Safety Risk Manager at Facilities Management, said he advertised the 60 positions on the student safety committees' forums and within 5 hours, he received 175 applications from students.
“They had to submit motivations on why they should be appointed, and based on that, we've made our selection," said Brandon. “This is a welcome income for students."
The safety ambassadors started on Monday, 15 March 2021, and are stationed at all the faculties' entrances around SU campus. They assist in ensuring that all students are COVID-19 compliant (mask-wearing, sanitising and social distancing) and have completed the Higher Health's HealthCheck self-monitoring app tool. Students will spot them wearing bright green safety caps and safety jackets.
The ambassadors work in rotating shifts from 7h30 until 16h30 weekdays to ensure that they can also attend their classes during the day. “This is a temporary arrangement, and our ambassadors will be on campus as we settle into our new way of living on campus," says Brandon.
