Chemistry and Polymer Science
The Department of Chemistry and Polymer Science is one of the pre-eminent research departments in Chemistry in South Africa. Staff are engaged in a wide range of research areas, including synthetic and medicinal chemistry, physical and computational chemistry, supramolecular, materials and analytical chemistry. The department is also well-known in the country for its research and teaching of synthetic and analytical polymer chemistry.
We strive to foster and maintain a rich academic environment that is attractive to top scholars and students. Our goal is to conduct research and education in chemistry at an international level, which ultimately leads to the upliftment and benefit of all South Africans.
We currently offer undergraduate BSc degrees in the following three focal areas:
- Chemistry and Polymer Science
- Chemical Biology
- Applied and Sustainable Chemistry.
Thereafter, we offer BSc Honours programs in two streams, namely Chemistry or Polymer Science. Finally, many of our academic staff offer opportunities in their research groups for postgraduate students to pursue MSc and PhD research qualifications. Our postgraduate students are also actively involved in the life of the department, serving as demonstrators and tutors in undergraduate courses.
