Access with success: The next generation of STEM professionals
The Kutlwanong Centre for Maths, Science and Technology is an NGO that accelerates the quality and quantity of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) performance amongst township and rural youth. These centres aim to grow and nurture a talented pool of young black professionals that pursue STEM careers and have 17 centres across 7 provinces. Apart from annual visits to all national centres by Student Recruitment Division (SRD) and representatives from the AgriSciences, Engineering, Economic and Management Sciences, Medicine and Health Sciences and Science faculties, the Western Cape Centres visited campus on Saturday, 22 July 2023.
The team from SRD, faculties and a group of student ambassadors welcomed grade 12 learners to the Stellenbosch campus to explore and experience Matieland. Faculty experts showcased 'Science in action' to ensure that learners apply not only at SU but also for their best-fit programme, providing them access with success and enhancing the transformative student experience.
The group of 350 top achieving learners represented more than 30 high schools in Philippi and Khayelitsha. For most of the group, it was the first time they had the opportunity to visit and experience the oak-lined streets of Stellenbosch. This is an important engagement opportunity for the SRD team, as many of these schools represented are schools deemed as new market schools to the institution.
Student engagement provided real accounts of how the institution creates a sense of community and belonging, what attracted them to study at SU and how prospective Maties could better prepare for university.
Staff and students alike are excited to move the SU Vision forward, together.
