Faculty of Military Sciences

Stellenbosch University's (SU) Faculty of Military Science is  collocatred with the South African Military Academy.  The Faculty of Military Science provides a service to the Department of Defence (DoD) by providing professional military education to primarily, but not exclusively, candidate and commissioned officers of the DoD.

Faculty of Military Science

The Faculty of Military Science is based in Saldanha and officers bachelor and postgraduate programmes for selected officers of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and other defence forces. Selected programmes are also available for non-commissioned officers (NCOs) of the DOD on the Telematic Education Platform. 

These study programmes are focused on national security and defence issues, and are designed to serve the specific interest of the SANDF. They are are also designed to be as relevant as possible to the requirements of the officer in the SANDF Specialisation in any one of several disciplines, in keeping with students preferences, is possible - but only within the boundaries of their specific Arm of Service's requirements. The minimum duration for the full-time bachelor's programmes is three years (for Telematic Educational Platform minimum duration is four years and maximum six years.) 

The Faculty added a PhD programme to its academic offering. The PhD and Master's degree in Military Science are offered to both SANDF and non SANDF employees in the private sector.

Entry requirements

  • Prospective applicants for full-time undergraduate study must meet the following requirements:
  • Be a member of the SANDF;
  • Comply with the requirements for medical fitness as laid down by the Surgeon General;
  • Be in possession of a matriculation exemption with a minimum of a D- aggregate;
  • Comply with the minimum academic entrance admission requirements as prescribed by Stellenbosch University​;
  • Candidates must be computer literate before commencing with their studies.
  • Be recommended by the Military Academy Selection Board;
  • Accommodation is provided for single individuals.
  • Qualifications offered
  • All qualifications offered by the Faculty are conferred by Stellenbosch University.
