Rear Admiral Derek Christian, a qualified submariner, served in a variety of seagoing and shore-based posts in the South African Navy and broader South African National Defence Force throughout his 42 years of service, until his retirement in February 2017.
Brigadier General John Migui Waweru was born on 5th December 1961 in Nairobi, Kenya. He joined the Kenya Navy on 14th April 1982. After his basic training at the Armed Forces Training College in Lanet, Kenya, he attended his basic naval course at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, United Kingdom.
Hanno Teuteberg joined the South African Navy (SA Navy) in 1977 and qualified as a seagoing combat officer onboard Type 12 Frigates followed by a stint as a Hydrographic Officer. In the mid-80s, he moved to the submarine branch where he followed the normal career path to commanding a submarine and then the flotilla itself (1998).

Dries Putter is a senior lecturer at the Defence Intelligence Studies at the Department of Strategic Studies, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University. He has functional experience in land- and sea warfare, intelligence, and defence acquisition and related matters such as defence intellectual property and arms control. He holds the rank of Captain (SA Navy). His PhD focussed on Defence Knowledge Management and have master’s degrees in security (MMS), defence (MMil) and business leadership (MBL). He is an Associate Researcher at the National Security Hub, University of Canberra. His research interests are hybrid warfare, counterintelligence, covert action and intelligence.
