Centre for Military Studies (CEMIS)

The Centre for Military Studies (CEMIS) advances research in defence and security, addressing critical priorities for the Department of Defence. We use a multidisciplinary approach to tackle strategic, operational and tactical challenges, upholding rigorous academic standards and building expertise through local and international collaborations.

CEMIS hosts the annual Counter-terrorism, Technology and Development in Africa conference in partnership with Óbuda University in Budapest, Hungary – an event spotlighted at prominent gatherings like the Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo in Pretoria. We also co-hosted the Visegrad-Africa Conference with Jagiellonian University in Poland and Óbuda University, expanding our global reach and fostering vibrant knowledge exchange.

CEMIS also hosts the South African Defence Artificial Intelligence Research Unit (DAIRU), launched in 2024.
