Department of Nursing and Midwifery

Preparing the next generation of industry experts

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery at Stellenbosch University is known for its innovative blend of rigorous academics with extensive clinical practice. Our programmes in primary healthcare, emergency nursing, mental health, and advanced midwifery are designed with real-world impact in mind. For example, our midwifery curriculum has pioneered community-based maternal care models that have been adopted in local clinics, while our emergency nursing training has contributed to the development of national protocols for critical care.

Our students gain hands-on experience through clinical placements at Tygerberg Hospital and other regional facilities, which has led to measurable improvements in patient care. Our master’s and PhD programmes have produced research that directly informs healthcare policies, with graduates publishing studies that have reshaped mental health and primary care practices across Africa.
