Division of Infectious Diseases

The Division of Infectious Diseases at Tygerberg Hospital and housed within the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is engaged in comprehensive education, research, and clinical services related to the diagnosis, management and prevention of infections in the community and the hospital environment and the promotion of rational antimicrobial use across all levels of care.

Key clinical focus areas include people with HIV, including severe opportunistic infections and co-infections like hepatitis B and tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistant hospital acquired infections and outbreaks of highly communicable infections like viral haemorrhagic fever, typhoid and diphtheria.

We work closely with the Divisions of Medical Microbiology, Medical Virology and Clinical Pharmacology as well as the Unit for Infection Prevention and Control.

Our programmes

Special Units

The Division of Infectious Diseases presides over three special units, namely Genetic and Molecular Diseases, Geriatric Medicine and Experimental Medicine.

Experimental Medicine Group

The Experimental Medicine Group was established to complement the clinical efforts in the Department of Medicine. The group consists of full-time researchers dedicated to contributing to the improvement of chronic disease management via the study of regulatory systems in terms of disease prevention, disease pathology, therapeutic target identification and drug discovery. The group is currently housed in the Division of Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine, but widely collaborates across departments, faculties and institutions. We offer postgraduate students – both in medicine and in science – the opportunity to participate in projects supervised by an integrated team of scientists and clinicians. The approach to pertinent questions in the health sector is approached in a multidisciplinary manner, with consideration of patient lived experience.
