The Division of Cardiology, housed within the Department of Medicine, is dedicated to delivering exceptional cardiac care, education and research. We boast state-of-the-art facilities, including a 25-bed coronary care unit, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, an echocardiography laboratory and a dedicated outpatient clinic support our clinical services at Tygerberg Hospital. Our multidisciplinary teams are committed to personalised, evidence-based care, consistently setting new benchmarks in cardiac treatment.

In addition to our clinical and teaching commitments, we proudly host SUNHEART – a Stellenbosch University centre that drives cardiology training, research and outreach. SUNHEART has become a hub for groundbreaking projects, including award-winning clinical trials in interventional cardiology and comprehensive studies on heart failure management. By investing in modern infrastructure, cultivating expert human resources and launching targeted community engagement programmes, SUNHEART enables us to extend advanced cardiac care to underserved populations.

Echocardiography Short Course

The SUNECHO course is an annual training programme designed for both beginners and experienced echocardiographers. It provides a solid foundation in echocardiography principles while offering advanced insights into complex clinical applications. This approach will ensure that all, including those with no experience in echocardiography as well as experienced echocardiographers, will benefit from the course. In addition, SUNECHO is tailored to support candidates preparing for the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE) accreditation examinations.More on our 14th SUNECHO course
