Head of Unit: Dr Anna Hartford
Vasti Roodt is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and the founding director of PROSPER. She holds and MA and DPhil in Philosophy from Stellenbosch University. Her research specialisation is moral and political philosophy, with specific focus on issues around the public/private distinction, contractualism and political metaphor. Her current research focuses on the the way in which metaphor and analogy influence our reasoning about political concepts. Prof Roodt is currently serving as the Dean of Humanities at Stellenbosch University.
Head of Unit: Dr Anna Hartford
Dr. Anna Hartford is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy at Stellenbosch University and the Head of the Unit for Social and Political Ethics. Her research focuses on moral epistemology— including the ethics of ignorance, and broader questions of knowledge and responsibility— as well as questions in applied ethics. She received her MA in Cultural Reporting and Criticism from New York University, and her PhD in Philosophy from the University of Cape Town. She has been a Research Associate in the Unit for Social and Political Ethics since 2019, and co-developed the Unit’s MPhil programme. She spent four years as a researcher in the Neuroscience Institute at the University of Cape Town, before joining the Stellenbosch Department.
