Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Preparing the next generation of industry experts

At the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, we are devoted to advancing the well-being of children in the Western Cape. Our comprehensive approach spans specialised healthcare services, innovative medical education, and focused research programmes that tackle pressing paediatric challenges such as infectious diseases, malnutrition, and developmental disorders.

Our students gain invaluable hands-on training through placements at local clinics and community centres, preparing them to provide compassionate care in diverse healthcare settings. We have pioneered outreach initiatives that have improved immunisation rates and reduced infant mortality, directly benefiting local communities. By working closely with community partners, our department offers opportunities for students to contribute to child health actively, ensuring they emerge as skilled, empathetic practitioners ready to make a tangible difference.

Housed within our Department is the Desmond Tutu TB Centre and the Family Clinical Research Unit (FAMCRU).
