Division of Dermatology

The Division of Dermatology at Stellenbosch University, based at Tygerberg Academic Hospital, provides expert care for diseases of the skin, hair, and nails across all age groups. Our service includes a busy outpatient clinic, a 10-bed inpatient ward, and serves as a major referral centre for the Western Cape.

We are actively involved in teaching and training at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels—equipping general practitioners and dermatologists to deliver specialist, high-quality dermatological care to our population.

Our research focuses on conditions most relevant to Africa, including acral melanoma, hidradenitis suppurativa, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo, and dermatopathology.

Through strong local and international collaborations, outreach activities, and community education programmes, we remain committed to advancing dermatological care, research, and education in South Africa and beyond.

Our programmes

Undergraduate Programme: Dermatology Module

Medical students receive comprehensive clinical and theoretical training in dermatology. The clinical component includes rotations at Tygerberg Hospital, where students gain hands-on experience through direct patient interaction. The theoretical component is delivered through structured lectures and podcast-based learning, ensuring a solid foundation in dermatological principles and practice

Postgraduate Programme: Dermatology Training

The 48-month Postgraduate Program in Dermatology follows the requirements of the CMSA and HPCSA. Registrars may write the primary exam after six months in training and must complete both the CMSA exit examination and a research dissertation through Stellenbosch University.

Training covers medical, surgical, and procedural dermatology, with a strong focus on dermatopathology and clinico-pathological correlation.
