The Division of Health Systems and Public Health at Stellenbosch University is part of the Department of Global Health and comprised of two key units: Health Systems and Public Health, and Occupational Medicine. Together, these units work to advance research, education, and practical solutions that improve health outcomes, promote health equity, and address the evolving needs of diverse populations.

We aim to improve the health and well-being of communities by conducting transformative research, educating future leaders in health systems and public health, and influencing policy and practice through collaborative partnerships and innovative solutions that promote health equity, accessibility, and sustainability across diverse populations. ​

Our programmes

BSc Honours in Hyperbaric Medicine

The programme trains medical practitioners in the field of hyperbaric medicine. As a medical practitioner you are exposed to various hyperbaric medicine concepts, with the focus being on the practice of hyperbaric medicine in the clinical hospital setting. This programme does not cover the occupational health aspects related to diving medicine or hyperbaric tunnelling. These occupational health aspects are covered in the Underwater Medicine programme.

Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Management

The purpose of the programme is to prepare you for advanced and specialised professional employment within the health system, and to develop your knowledge and skills in healthcare management at an advanced level in an applied work setting. The curriculum is based on workplace leadership and managerial roles need for more PhD-level.

MPhil Health Systems and Services Research

The MPhil in Health Systems is a multidisciplinary programme aimed at developing and building the professional capacity and leadership of role players in health systems while also contributing to knowledge generation in Africa. The programme is designed to accommodate full-time practitioners from a range of fields including social work, medicine, nursing, health economics, public health, health service management, policy-making and non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

Postgraduate Diploma in Occupational Medicine

The programme aims to equip you as a medical practitioner with knowledge and skills of appropriate breadth and depth in occupational health so that you can comply with the legal requirements for practicing occupational health in South Africa. At the end of the programme, you will be able to effectively plan, implement and manage occupational health services, and effectively manage patients with an occupational health-related disease and/or injury within the multidisciplinary team.

MSc in Baromedical Sciences

This research-based programme comprises an approved research project, a thesis and an oral presentation. The initial research protocol will be approved by the departmental research committee and the Health Research Ethics Committee of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences.

MPhil in Cancer Science

The MPhil in Cancer Science is an interdisciplinary programme focused on providing an in-depth understanding of cancer from a molecular, environmental, public health and treatment perspective. It is aimed at students wanting to broaden their understanding of the complexities concerning cancer, and pursue cancer or cancer-related research with the aim of reducing its burden on humanity.

MMed in Public Health Medicine/MMed in Occupational Medicine

To pursue either of these degrees, you must at least have four years of training time within a registrar training post and in an HPCSA approved training post number and have passed the CMSA examination in order to register as a specialist in Public Health Medicine.

Short Course: Economic Evaluations

The short course is exclusively online, using a combination of live synchronous webinars and online recordings. All teaching and learning will be facilitated via SUNLearn. Online content will be spread across a period of 16 weeks, with students required to engage with content weekly, punctuated with online discussions and webinars.
