NRF Rating

The NRF rating system benchmarks South African researchers against global standards, recognising excellence and impact in research. Ratings are based on the quality and influence of a researcher’s outputs over the past eight years, as assessed by international peers. The system promotes high-quality, high-impact research and supports the development of future researchers through rated supervisors.

Rating categories

  • A - Researchers regarded as world leaders in their fields;
  • B - Researchers that enjoy considerable international recognition by their peers;
  • C - Researchers regarded as established in their field;
  • Y - Researchers recognised as having the potential to establish themselves as researchers within a five-year period
  • P - Young researchers, with exceptional potential, that are likely to become future international leaders in their fields.

The rating process at the NRF is coordinated by members of academia who are represented in the following committees:

  • 42 Specialist Committees coordinated by a Convener
  • 10 Chair persons and 10 Assessors
  • The Executive Evaluation Committee
  • The Appeals Committee
