Partnership for Africa & Next Generation of Academics

Overview

The Partnership for Africa’s Next Generation of Academics (PANGeA) is a collaborative network consisting of leading African universities focused on fostering excellence in scholarship across the arts, humanities, and social sciences on the African continent.

The network aims to:

  • Develop research capacity in bringing African expertise to Africa’s challenges
  • Develop research capacity on site
  • Participate in exchange schemes, workshops, and training seminars
  • Joint projects and co-supervision
  • And ultimately joint doctoral degrees

History

PANGeA was founded in 2010 by the University of Botswana, the University of Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Makerere University (Uganda), the University of Malawi, the University of Nairobi (Kenya) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa). Four years later, the University of Ghana and the University of Yaoundé I in Cameroon joined the consortium.

From 2010 to 2019,  82 doctoral candidates, from 8 African countries in the PANGeA network have graduated, with the average rate of completion 2.94 years.

Within the PANGeA network, 65 doctoral graduates have returned to resume academic posts across various African countries.
